This is what happens when someone who is creative gets upset because you tossed his Taylor guitar across the tarmac. I hope this gets re posted on a billion websites.

Personally, I've flown with my Taylor guitar and had no problems; but, I've never flown with my guitar on United. I guess I'll stick with South West. United can go suck eggs.

Apparently, United has no idea about the great sacrilege that it has committed. Maybe I'll pass this along to Bob Taylor and see if we can start a Taylor boycott of United. Wouldn't that be grand? HAHAHAHAHA (evil conspiratorial laugh). Taylor owners unite (no pun intended)! Let us bring low the mighty airline who dares to break our precious guitars into tiny piecies. Let them feel your mighty displeasure! Better yet, all Taylor owners should make videos of our guitar nightmares on airlines! Post them on the internet and name names! It seems like this season is so busy that after it is all over I can only feel a sense of relief. However, that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy celebrating with the whole church that Jesus Christ is indeed risen.

Each year as we progress through the Liturgical cycle we are called to draw ourselves deeper into the mystery of Christ's passion, death and resurrection. What an awesome privilege to know that God loves us so much that he was willing to die so that we might be free and able to live with Him for eternity.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Well, seeing that I have not been very active on the blogosphere in the last couple of months I suppose that I owe an explaination to everyone. It looks like Galveston could use some prayers. Hurricane Ike was very powerful and caused much damage to Texas. We should also remember that Haiti and Cuba also suffered terrible damage and loss of life from this storm. This season appears to be an active one so let's pray for all of us who live in hurricane alley.

Father, we pray for all those who have been impacted by Hurricane Ike. We remember especially those who live in areas where buildings and infrastructure were not built to withstand these kinds of forces. We mourn the loss of life and we pray for a swift recovery of the survivors. May we place our trust in you and know that is by your power that we can live in freedom from fear and anxiety. Help us to realize that you are with us even through the most dangerous of storms.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. You have a great voice and a wonderful talent. Of course Psalm 78 is coming up the weekend of September 13th and the only thing we can find is the chant. Is there any way I can hear what you did with the Psalm? I started The Spirit of the Liturgy by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger aka Pope Benedict XVI.

I have had some reservations about reading the Pope's books mainly because they seem so dense and hard to follow. So far I have found this particular little gem to be quite easy to read. I have finished Psalm 78: Do Not Forget which is the setting for the Feast of the Exalation of the Cross on Sept. 12. And I have finished the refrain for Psalm 25: Remember Your Mercies, O Lord. I'm still deciding on how to proceed with the verse of Psalm 25. I think that I will try to have a metered melody, but that may change if there is no regular phonetic rhythm to follow in the text.

For Psalm 78, I chose to write a simple psalm tone for the verses because they were so irregular in English. Those Latin monks sure knew what they were doing when they invented Psalm tones. Personally, I felt a deep sadness as the loss the community there has suffered. As a musician and a Christian John Michael Talbot has been a real inspiration for me. His spirituality and his music have provided me with much comfort as I have faced challenges on my own journey.

At times like this I ask myself, "What I can do?" First of all, I know that I can pray for the community. Prayer is certainly an important part of dealing with adversity. I know that I can also give thanks because this fire did not result in any loss of life. Buildings can be rebuilt and possessions can be replaced. God did protect his children from physical harm in this instance.

However, since I do not possess large financial resources I am trying to do something small to give back to a person and a community who has given much to me. I have selected some of my favorite John Michael Talbot songs and compiled them to an iMix available through iTunes. These songs are ones that have supported and sustained my spirit over the years. I hope that many will choose to listen and download this music in an effort to support John Michael and the Brothers and Sisters of Charity.

Thank You!

A big thanks to everyone who logged on a voted for "Shine Out." I did take a little time last week to spend with the family during the Spring Break week. However, we didn't venture too far from home.

There will be some exciting things happening in the next couple of months. Top Catholic Songs is still very active with lots of contests and artist updates. Stop by and check out the new happenings. I will be participating in the next contest for the Top Ten Holy Spirit Songs. More details will follow as voting gets underway later this week.

I'm also going to be meeting with the Board of Directors for Worldwide Seminarian Support early next month. I don't want to discuss the details yet, but I'm hoping to develop a relationship with them that will be beneficial to both parties. Worldwide Seminarian Support has done much to support the Apostolic Life Community of Priests (ALCP) which runs a seminary in Tanzania. Through the fundraising efforts of Worldwide Seminarian Support over thirty priests have been assigned to serve in parishes all over the United States. Currently, there are requests from U.S. bishops for over thirty more. We need to support and pray for our priests and for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, deaconate and religious life. Also, we can support areas of the world where vocations are abundant, but financial resources to train men and women to serve the church are scarce.

That concludes the announcements and updates for now. May the peace of Christ be with you always.

Sean Clive Scores Big With Another Chart Topping Hit!

3-24-08
For Immediate Release
Milford, CT -

Top Catholic Songs formally announced today the voting results for the Top Ten Songs for Easter from Catholic Artists. B. Smith.
This is a song/prayer to our Lord expressing a loving desire to spend time in His presence adoring Him. As I wrote this song I was reflecting on how much I love to visit the perpetual adoration chapel and be in the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament. In His presence there is peace, healing, joy and love. In the silence, He speaks to us.

3. Holy God, We Praise Your Great Name by Nick Alexander.
A lively, reverent update to the classic hymn.

4. Open Book by Teresa Smith.
The song was inspired actually during my time of adoration - about going to adoration, his real presence, and speaks of Jesus' ability to "read" us well even though we may not be able to put into words something that may be weighing heavy on our hearts.

5. With You by Sean Clive.
"Come away with me for a while to a place set apart…" Sometimes all you need is quiet. This particular song was written as a result of one of those prayer times. I will never forget Joe sitting across from me, holding my hands and praying. I was in tears that morning, feeling out of place... Joe prayed for a long time. His voice was comforting, as if Jesus was speaking to me through him. I kept hearing the words: I am enough, I am enough, I am enough for you. Do not worry about your ministry, your age, or what it takes to produce this offering of praise. I have given you everything you need to accomplish this work. I am enough for you.The next morning I wrote this song.We never know where God is leading, especially when we feel the weakest. But, if we are in prayer, we can be sure God is listening and He has a plan. God is enough.

GeorgeLower.com is now Live!

I am very happy to announce that GeorgeLower.com is now up and running. I offer these humble snippets for your consideration:

The first one makes me wonder what medication the band is taking. The second one just defies description in its ablilty to say abosolutly nothing of substance. The secular messianism of Obama is astounding to say the least.

At least the music from the '60's was authentic. Is this the best the music commuity has to offer? I guess that is a stupid question.

Of course some of the responsiblity for this has to do with the candidates. It is very difficult to build a fortress out of cotton candy.

Top Catholic Songs Press Release

Here is the Top Catholic Songs official press release for the Top Ten Songs of Lent 2008. During our announcement time our pastor was reviewing some upcoming events. He said, "Lent begins Feburary 6. It is very early this year." A lady behind me said enthusiastically, "Yeah!" I was a little taken aback because most people think about Lent as a time of penance and prayer not necessarily something anticipated with joy. Then I had to stop and check my own thoughts. I began to question my assumption. Why do I not look forward to the Lenten season? Why do I think of Lent in terms of sacrifice and things I have to give up?

I do not think that original intent of Lent was to focus on fasting and giving up things. These disciplines are simply means to and end. They are tools in our spiritual tool chest. The practice of fasting brings a spiritual dimension to the ordinary practice of nourishing our bodies. We are to use the time we would normally devote to bodily sustenence to nourish and sustain our spirits. This time honored tradition has been practiced since Biblical times. It provides a time for us to clear our minds of the mundane so that we may focus on the eternal. Likewise the practice of abstaining from certain behaviors, foods or activities is an outward sign of an internal change of heart. Simply giving up something for Lent means little if we do not replace that activity, food or behavior with something that is spiritually edifying. Yet, like all tools these disciplines can be misused.

That is why we hear Jesus speaking today in the Gospel of Matthew, "Be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice." Some might interpret Jesus' comments as prohibiting public acts of piety. A careful reading reveals that Jesus is more concerned with the inward attitude of the pious person. Is the act of piety an outward expression of a Godly heart or simply a means to self aggrandizement? Jesus was more concerned about the inward attitudes of the heart rather than the outward acts. It is in the changing of our hearts and attitudes that we can be drawn closer to God.

If we use these spiritual tools properly we can find much happiness, peace and joy during this Lenten season. This fact alone should give us great cause for rejoicing. We as Catholics always celebrate Lent in the full knowledge of the Resurrection. Lent is not a time of mourning; it should be a time to embrace the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. It should be a time of spiritual growth. It should be a time when we can all say, "Yeah! Lent begins today!"

It's Time to Vote!

Yes, it is time to vote this week. Not only will many people be selecting a Presidential candidate, but we will also be selecting the TOP TEN Catholic Songs of Lent (2008). The second reading for Ash Wednesday from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians says "Now is the favorable time; this is the day of our salvation." Lent is just around the corner and now at this favorable time we can minister to our fellow Catholics who are hungering and thirsting for spiritual nourishment. Cathoic music has much to offer those who are seeking to walk closer with the Lord during this Lenten season.

My friends at Top Catholic Songs have selected 19 songs to be considered for the Top Ten Songs of Lent. All that is left to do is to join the yahoo group (send an email to: topcatholicsongs-subscribe@yahoogroups.com) then VOTE for your favorite songs. Please take the time to join and vote. It will mean alot to the artists who have nominated songs. It will encourage them to keep producing quality music that ministers to your spiritual needs. It will also mean alot to other Catholics many of whom are not even aware of these rich musical resources. It will help to build up the kingdom as we work together to raise the profile and awareness of Catholic Music.

To be upfront and honest, I do have a horse in this race. I have two songs nominated "If Today" and "Turn My Heart." Both of these can be heard here (www.myspace.com/georgelowermusic). I hope that you enjoy my music; but, more importantnly please vote your heart. This is only the beginning of something that is much bigger than my personal successes or failures. May God be with you during this Lenten season.

Top Catholic Songs will be posting the winning songs next week. Voting is open until Friday, February 8, 2008.

Top Ten Songs of Lent

Top Catholic Songs will soon be selecting the Top Ten Lenten Songs for 2008. This is exciting for many Catholic musicians and artists who up to this point have been stymied from getting some real national exposure. The nomination process is already underway with voting due to begin the First week of Lent. This will kick off a six week advertising blitz that will feature the Top Ten Songs for each of the following categories: Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Divine Mercy, Adoration and Confirmation.

A question that one may ask is: "How are the songs nominated and selected for inclusion in the Top Ten list?" To answer, each artist that wishes to have his or her song considered simply nominates it for considertation. This is done because the winners split the cost of the adverstising. Therefore, if someone nominates a song they are committing to pay their portion of the cost if that song is selected. There is an option to nominate a song into a "I love this song" category. This exists so that others can make suggestions that are not financially binding on the artists.

Once a song is nominated it must survive the voting process in order to be included in the Top Ten list. This is where anyone can decide to participate. If you love music and would like to have a voice in which songs are included visit Top Catholic Songs and click on the "Join" tab at the top of the page. Follow the directions to become part of this influential growing movement.

For the upcoming selection of the Top Ten Songs of Lent, I have submitted two of my own songs for consideration, "If Today" and "Turn My Heart." Wade. I wanted to expand a little on this topic and share some resources that are available for those who have been part of an abortion or those who have been affected in some way.

First of all, as a Catholic I find myself in a peculiar category because as I mentioned before, I stand for life in all cases. This includes euthanasia and capital punishment as well. So I find myself at odds with conservatives because of my death penalty stance; and, at the same time, I am at odds with liberals over my position on abortion. While my political sympathies definitely run towards the conservative side of the spectrum I choose to be a Catholic first and a capitalist second. Where the two value systems may seem to conflict I choose to give the benefit of the doubt to the Church.

This ties directly into two main thoughts that I have been considering for some time. The first being, "How do I minister effectively to those who have experienced or participated in an abortion?" This is a very delicate topic because of the intense emotions that people harbor long after the deed has been done. In order to answer this question I have come across some wonderful people who are involved with a group called Project Rachael. It is a post-abortive healing ministry. Information on this ministry can be found here: http://www.hopeafterabortion.com/ What I find most remarkable about this ministry that it has continued to grow and reach out to more than just women. In a recent article for the The Colombian (the official magazine for the Knights of Columbus) Project Rachael has started to reach out to men who have been affected by abortion on some level. This has been a controversial move and it has not been totally supported by some of the women involved. However, I think it is a good first step toward recognizing that abortion traumatizes all involved men and women alike.

Secondly, I have been thinking about another question that does not have an easy answer. What effect has Roe v. Wade had upon our society? This is not an easy question to answer because there are many factors that can influence attitudes, values and the opinions of people at large. Furthermore, society as a whole is not a homogeneous group. There are many factions and sub-factions that have had differing reactions to Roe v. Wade. However, I think I can safely say that since Roe v. Wade our society as a whole has become more callous and violent both in a literal and vicarious sense of the word. It seems that we have turned from pursuing truth and beauty in our popular culture and replaced it with the pursuit of shock value and titillation. I understand that correlation is not definitive proof of causation; yet, I sometimes wonder if we underestimate the profound effect that fateful decision from 1972 has had on our culture.

I would like to close with the thought that I do believe that all is not lost. There is still hope. Wherever and whenever we can stand for life in spite of the difficulties, we can bring a small ray of hope and joy into this world of darkness. God can use our small efforts to change hearts and minds. The most important thing is to have faith; and, as Pope John Paul II said, "Do not be afraid!"

PS Don't forget to check out the wonderful Pro-Life music available at http://www.topcatholicsongs.com/

Fred Withdraws

I can't say that I'm surprised. Thirty-five years ago in the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade, the United States legalized the practice of abortion. Since that time more than four million babies have lost their lives. This is an issue that speaks deeply to me because I have had a real intellectual struggle with this issue within my own spiritual life. I have not always understood why abortion is such a grave evil.

Perhaps one of the reasons that I have struggled so is because so many women find themselves in difficult circumstances; and, one cannot help but feel empathy for their situation. Yet, the church's teaching on the sanctity of human life is clear. Furthermore, in choosing to end a human life through abortion one is essentially choosing an objective evil in order that some temporary life situation may be made subjectively easier. The taking of life even for seemingly good purposes cannot be a legitimate moral choice. Therefore, after much deep thought and prayer, I have to stand on the side of life in all cases. This is a very difficult position to maintain because it is often misconstrued as a harsh and judgemental position. Yet, nothing could be further from the truth.

I find for some it is hard to move past the deep emotions this issue elicits. That is why I find that music can be a powerful tool that can help communicate the truth of the Pro-Life position in a way that combines both the intellectual and emotional comprehension of the pain and evil caused by our culture of death. My good friends at http://www.topcatholicsongs.com/ have compiled a list of the best Pro-Life songs that are currently available. These songs run the musical spectrum from "soft contemporary to jazz infused rap". The featured artists cover a whole multitude of Pro-Life issues from nearly every angle, from the political to the personal. If you are looking for inspiration and support for a culture of life please check out these artists and support their music.

Since we are on this topic allow me to put in a plug for my favorite Pro-life Song "Unborn Victims of Violence" found here: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=76875197&id=76875245&s=143441 on iTunes. You can also check out Fr. I take my civic responsiblity to vote seriously; and, I try to vote based on issues and core pricinciples. Looking at the field of candidates that share my philosophy of limited government, low taxes and maximum personal liberty I have to throw my hat in the ring for Fred Thompson.

I truly believe that Fred is a humble patriot who will make a great President. Right now the field on the Republican side is wide open. There is no clear cut front runner. If you feel that we are headed for real fiscal trouble if we do not return to conservative (i.e. constitutional) principles of government then please consider Fred Thompson. There are many other good men (and one woman) running for President. To paraphrase Hillary Clinton some of those candidates are right and some of them are wrong. I think Fred has the right combination of experience, integrity and leadership to help us continue to be a strong nation.

https://www.fred08.com/contribute.aspx?RefererID=a66158ea-2fd9-4d8c-b92d-c0afa07bcb94

It's Called Christmas with a Capital "C"

These guys are pretty hard core, but I think it goes without saying that we should not be afraid to say "Merry Christmas." Our nation was founded on the notion that we should be able to worship God in any way that we see fit. Those who wish to intimidate or discourage a portion of the population from wishing our fellow humans a hearty, "Merry Christmas!" should be given a copy of the Constitution to read. I usually don't take offense at a sincere "Happy Holidays" but I ususally reply, "The same to you, and Merry Christmas!" So far I haven't been jumped by angry agnostics or militant athiests, but I do think that we should give more thought to the religious implications of the Christmas Season (which extends beyond December 25) and try to celebrate with true joy rather than put ourselves deeper into debt.

Anyway, enoy the video! I know that as we practice more and get used to singing more with each other that things will get even better.

My favorite comment of the evening when a wonderful lady approached me and thanked me for the evening then remarked, "There sure sounded like there was more than six of you singing." I have taken these first couple of weeks of 2008 to be on vacation. It is the first time I have taken vacation at this time of the year. I have found it somewhat relaxing even though everyone else has gotten back into the swing of work and school. I have been reflecting on the past year and planning for this coming year. As I look back and reflect I think that overall 2007 was a pretty good year. I have certainly made progress spiritually. That is what I want to work on for the coming year. It has been a challenge for me to find balance between my family life and my professional life. I'm sure that is a pretty common challenge particularly for those who like me have to force themselves to take time off. I'm amazed at how much my children have grown; and, I think daily about the short time that I have been given to guide and nurture them.

So looking ahead I have decided on a few resolutions. First, to work hard at being a better husband and father. Secondly, to make progress improving my physical fitness and keeping my weight under control. Third, to work on writing some more psalm settings as well as improve my paino playing. I think that is about all I can handle for this year.

I'm looking forward to 2008 because I will be releasing some new material through ILP. I'll keep you all posted as things develop and the St. Augustine hymnal nears completion.

Merry Christmas

Tis the season to be exahusted! Of all the dogmas posited by the church this one is probably the most misunderstood. The church teaches that God the Father protected Mary from original sin from the moment of her conception. That is Mary was born without the stain of the orginal sin of Adam and Eve.

Of course many people question the validity of this teaching. Jesus, by living a perfect life, dying, and rising from the dead opened the path to salvation for all human kind. How could Mary who was obviously concieved before these events took place in history be protected from orginal sin prior to Jesus' saving work on earth? Part of the answer lies in understanding that God lives outside of time and linear progressions. Even Jesus says in the Gospels, "To God, all are alive." (my paraphrase) God can look at the entire expanse of human history from beginning to end in a single moment. He is not limited by the physical laws of the universe in his extensions of grace and mercy. That is why the church also teaches that Jesus' saving work though taking place at a specific time in history extends both forward and backward to offer salvation to all who will choose to receive it. That is to say, the Risen Christ has transcended time. We celebrate with Mary who was chosen to fulfill a special role in the saving work of Christ that we can all be cleansed of original sin and someday transcend time with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ joining Him in the eternal heavenly banquet.

And you probably thought it was some sci-fi writer who invented the time travel paradox....Know you know better. :-)

Check this out ya'll!

Hey my brother just posted this clip on his myspace page. I think that should be cause enough for automatic inclusion in the canon of saints.

In all seriousness, I can hardly believe that I have been married to my wife longer than I lived at home with my parents. It certainly doesn't feel like it has been a long time. I guess that is the grace of the Sacrament because in spite of the many difficulties we have had over the years I have a hard time recalling those low moments. So, I went and finally set up my Shoutlife account.

It has been an amazing experience. So far I have gotten numerous friend requests and guestbook comments. It is a bit overwhelming at first. However, the people seem genuine and not the least bit crazy (no offense to myspace). Sorry, about the paranthetical comment but my married friend gets hit on all the time at myspace, even though his profile clearly states that he is happily married. I'm actually kind of jealous because no one ever hits on me. I guess it is the five kids thing. I really don't have the time or the inclination for that kind of nonsense. Anyway, I digress.

If you want to make contacts in a friendly and wholesome atmosphere consider going over to Shoutlife.com and check em out. Waiting for what? For Christians (particularly those of the Catholic variety) we are preparing to celebrate both the advent of Christ into the world at Christmas and the hope of Christ's return at the end of the world. While some Christians tend to emphasize dramatic end of the world scenarios (ala the Left Behind series), the Catholic perspective is one of hopeful expectation. Rather than looking for signs and prophecy Catholics believe that Jesus can come at any time and without warning. This belief is firmly rooted in the Gospel of St. Matthew (ch. 24) from this past Sunday: "Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come."

May the peace of Christ which passes all understanding be with you and your family during this Advent Season

Happy Thanksgiving!

I will be taking a few days to spend with my family. I hope that everyone ejoys a happy, safe and relaxing holiday. I really love this time of the year even if it is the busiest for musicians. It is good to remind ourselves of the many blessings that we have been given over the last year. Usually I take a few minutes to reflect and look at the many gifts that God has chosen to send my way. Not with the intention of congratulating myself on being a good person, but to really ask myself how I can share these blessings and gifts with others. Unless we are willing to empty our buckets God cannot continue to fill them with good things.

Peace and blessings to you and yours. I hope that we can raise the roof singing hymns of praise to our God.

Hope to see you there!

Welcome!

Hello and welcome to my new blog. I am a Cathoic musician working full time in a South Florida parish. Currently, I'm writing music for use in Catholic worship as well as personal reflection and meditation. I will be using this blog to keep people updated about new happenings and events in my ministry. Also, I will be posting my thoughts and reflections on happenings in the Catholic music world.

As of last week Nick Alexander and Joel Stein among others have started a blog to document the Top-Ten Catholic songs for various generes, styles and occastions. Take a minute to go over and check out http://www.topcatholicsongs.com/. These lists will be available for all to view and comment upon. It will be a fun way to promote excellence in Catholic music as well as a forum to post your thoughts and comments.

George L.
